Tomatoes projected to be grown in 2009
These are seeds Willoway Farm has to chosen from our seed collection. This list is to give the CSA member an idea of what tomatoes they will receive in their basket in 2009.
Seeds are from the following seed distributors: BSH= Baker Street Heirloom Seeds, SSE= Seed Saver Exchange, AL= Abundant Life seeds, SOC= Seeds of Change:
Ananas Noire (BSH): Develop by Pascal Moreau from Belgium a horticulturist. The flesh is bright green with deep red streaks; sweet and smoky with a hint of citrus.
Aunt Ruby’s German Green (SSE): Beefsteak Fruits, sweet juicy flesh, refreshing spicy flavor. When soft to touch they are ready to harvest
Basinga (SSE): True yellow heart shaped fruits with a tinge of pink on the blossom end: sweet delicate tangy flavor, mild but not bland.
Black Cherry (BSH): Black cherry tomato
Black From Tula (SSE): Russian heirloom. Full flavor, great for slicing
Bloody Butcher (BSH): 60 day red cluster tomato 3-4 oz in size. Nice tomato flavor
Brandywine (Baker Street heirloom seeds):
Cherokee Purple SSE: Purplish-brown, flattened globes with outstanding flavor.
Cherry Tomato (AL) Biodynamic Seed unusually sweet rich flavor
Cream Sausage: Nice sweet flavor great for salsa
Crnkovic Yugoslavian (SSE): Large Beefsteak almost never crack; full tomato flavor.
Djena Lee’s: Minnesota Heirloom won 1st prize in the Chicago World’s Fair in 1930’s; 6 oz. fruit.
German Red Strawberry (BSH): Small amount of seed and juice. Rich and sweet flavor, great for slicing
Great white (BSH): Good and deliciously fruity
Henderson’s Pink Ponderosa (BSH):
Hillbilly Potato Leaf (SSE): Slicing Tomato, sweet juicy flattened fruit about 1 pound each. Beautiful yellow fruits streaked with red on the blossom end.
Hungarian Heart: Pink Oxheart. Have very few seeds and good for fresh eating.
Italian Heirloom (SSE): Excellent full tomato flavor; easy to peel, ideal for slicing and canning.
Japanese Trifele Black: Rich full flavor great for canning
Nebraska Wedding (SSE): Meaty shiny orange skinned tomato. Well balanced flavor.
Nyagous: Baseball size black tomato; from German seed collector Reinhard Kraft.
Omar Lebanese (Baker Street Heirloom): Pink, huge and tasty.
Pineapple Striped Tomato (BSH): Very sweet and fruity; yellow with red marbling through it.
Powers Heirloom (SSE): Originated in Scott County in Southwest Virginia over 100 years ago.Yellow Paste tomato great flavor similar to Amish Paste tomato.
Purple Russian (SSE): Great Taste, sweet, meaty plum shaped tomato.
Redfield Beauty (SSE): Heirloom selected from Livingston’s Beauty in 1885. Excellent flavor pink fruits.
Rose Tomato: Large, meaty, dusty rose color. Great Taste rivals Brandywine.
Sandpoint (AL): Firm slightly oblong, red fruit; tasty and full flavored, reaching 1 ¾ by 2 inches with smooth, shiny thin skins. Good for sauce.
Sheboygan: Grown since the early 1900’s by Lithuanian immigrants of Sheboygan, WI. Pink paste type fruits excellent flavor great for canning.
Soldacki Tomato (SSE): Polish Heirloom with large fruits dense and meaty; sweet outstanding flavor.
Sudduth’s Brandywine (SSE): Rich, delightfully intense tomato flavor. Can reach to 2 lbs
Sungold Cherry (John Scheepers): Gold cherry tomatoes and sweet.
Striped Cavern Tomato (SSE): Beautiful stuffing tomato; keeps 4 weeks when harvested ripe.
Wisconsin 55 (SOC): One of the finest red slicers developed at the University of WI. This represents one of the last improved OP varieties before hybrids dominated the market. It has firm skin and solid flesh with a true tomato flavor. (Written in Seeds if Change).
